360 CLARA Revival Night Lights

Last May, CLARA magazine held '360 Revival Night Lights', it was an event to launch their new revamped look. At its opening, they took three young designers who are hot discussion. Andreas Odang*, KLE and Tex Saverio showed their latest collections at the Clara Revival Night Light. We were honored to have our 'COMMUNION' pieces as a complement to Andreas Odang's Fall collection. The show was accompanied by the S.I.G.I.T feat. Bina Seni Vocal (BSV) Choir, and visual mapping by Isha Hening and Yolando Siahaya.

*) Andreas Odang is a young designer who started his career in 2006. He specializes in bridal fashion and coutoure/bespoke collections. He was a finalist at the Concours both in 1999 and 2000 and he won a summer scholarship program at the prestigious Instituto Marangoni in 2001. He was a finalist of Femina Group’s Young Designers Competition (LPM) in 2005. His collection for JFW 2010/11 is called ‘Love Hurts’.

Bearing 'Vulva' to the world

We would like to share a little about the making of 'vulva' wall installation, we hope you enjoy it as much as we do. It took quite a lot of effort, but we really happy with the end result. Well, here it goes..

'SWEET AGONY'

Last April 28th 2011, we took part in another group exhibition at Dia.Lo.Gue artspace, Kemang. There were other 18 artist who participated the 'SWEET AGONY'. In 'vulva' we would like to portray the degrading values of women in modern world, by adopting the Javanese folklore 'BUTA KALA'; a mythical giant who loves to devour moon and virgins. It is the perfect metaphor to describe this alarming picture. We used acrylic, kain ikat and a lot of our personal trinkets from our closet to interpret the whole concept. We found that it's interesting to combine a lot of stuff and tell a story from it.

We've got some reviews of our 'VULVA' artwork from these guys:

'An example of this use of heritage as a medium, can be see in the standout piece by G.H.O.S.T titled Vulva. This large-scale mixed-media work has a plexiglass Javanese dragon head with fiery eyes and ominous fangs leading down to a neon green and pink pelvic skeleton before ending with soft colorful pom-pom ropes swinging from the end of the work. It is an assemblage filled with nuance as plastic alphabet magnets and even a sequined Mickey Mouse can be seen in this wall hanging, which speaks of the commodification of female power in modern Indonesian life. Yasmina Yesy and Agra Satria, the masterminds behind G.H.O.S.T,. took 4 weeks to create this work, which Agra describes as one which “articulates the idea that modern women don’t feel like they have boundaries.” The giant monster head, Yasmina adds, “is a metaphor, expressing that women have more power but something is lost in return.” Vulva, created at the duo’s base-camp in Bandung is a gorgeously executed work and crowd favorite at the opening.' - sub-cult.com

'The largest piece in the exhibition was a wall hanging titled, Vulva. This mixed media piece, by G.H.O.S.T. (Yasmina Yustiviani and Agra Satria) is one where a plexiglass Javanese dragon head sits atop of a textile body, a colorful custom cloth ikat dreamscape that depicts alphabet magnets flowing into a neon green and pink pelvic skeleton, touching down on a landscape where a sequined Mickey Mouse frolics with a black bird with a human skull, and a benign white animal head. The work engages the viewer in a conversation about the commodification of female power, a relevant topic in the modern Indonesian femmenist dialogue. 'ARAFUSION' of Eri Dani

Last May, we collaborated with Eri Dani, a young fashion designer from ESMOD. We have known each other since we were in college. He was one of the best student known in his department, Textile and Craft. Then he won a scholarship in Esmod. After he finished his bachelor, he took a master degree and 'Arafusion' is his final project.His show debut took place in Jakarta Fashion and Food Festival in Kelapa Gading, Jakarta. Our chunky 'Communion: Rise of the Hybrids' pieces complement his beautiful drapey dress. We really love his entire collection. Congratulations Eri!

'SWARA SANG DEWI'

Last January, we were honored to contribute our piece on Titi DJ 'Swara Sang Dewi' solo concert. The show was held on 20-23 Januari 2011, Teater Jakarta, Taman Ismail Marzuki, Jakarta Pusat. After a short brief from mba Titi herself, we had a brainstorm with Ajeng and started to sketch and design an exclusive piece just for her. The piece was going to be worn on the first song of the show, we were thrilled to saw her on it!

The 2 hours concert will carry the 'Go Green' theme, for the costumes, properties, stage design, and other concerts support will be made from materials that are environmentally friendly. "This is my invitation to start caring about the environment. Because, if we see, natural phenomena lately started worrying. And I also began to worry about what kind of dwelling in the future that will be occupied by the children of my grandchildren if we do not begin to care about the environment, "said Titi.In the concert was also accompanied by Lovedrug, Rossa, Dewi Sandra, Sherina, Ello, Marcell and others.

1001 Doors - interpreting traditions

Last January, we participated in '1001 DOORS' interpreting traditions, an exhibition of doors and how we find a meaning in it. The event was held in January 26th to February 6th 2011, at Ciputra Marketing Gallery and curated by Mr. Asmudjo Jono Irianto. There were more than 100 artists, photographers and designers took part that night. It was one of the biggest exhibition we have ever been involved with. The event was opened by the Jakarta Govenor, Mr. Fauzi Bowo. A short description of '1001 DOORS' by Art Sociates:

'The exhibition “1001 Doors: Reinterpreting Tradition” aims to evoke the variety and diversity of Indonesian cultural heritage where the observers can step in the doors to watch and witness those heritage. They can peep through the key holes to have a glimpse of a future prophecy…, an indication of change. The Doors will become allegorical symbols of past and future, of ritual innovation, of behind and beyond and of tradition and contemporary.

Artists, craftsmen, designers, architects will be requested to respond to either some actual or allegorical doors based on their own imaginations. Showcased in this unique exhibition, the works are bound to present fascinating pieces of contemporary art, craft and design reflecting this generation’s vision on a chunk of cultural heritage & tradition.
The theme of the exhibition was conceived during long discusision with Taufik Rahzen. We express our gratitude for his contribution. We also thank all the artists and designers who have engaged in this exciting exhibition.'

There has been a surprise in the beginning of this month. Last week G.H.O.S.T was featured in Susie Bubble's blog, an independent fashion blogger from UK. She was photographed wearing 'Leviathan' necklace, a special item made just for her.

Here's what Susie says about our piece,

'I will provide a wee nugget though that centres around this beautiful ode to hiking/bungee ropes and acrylic by G.H.O.S.T., a jewellery label that again I discovered through a random, small-world meeting with someone who bore me gifts all the way from Indonesia. This is from the Ghost and the Temple of Shadows collection which has other ropey treats (I of course mean that in the BEST way possible...)'

On Last August, our necklace was seen on AMICA magazine. It was a tribute spread for Alexander McQueen. We were astonished by the result. The photographs were amazing. It is a privilege for us, that our pieces were paired with Sapto Djokokartiko's mini dress.

'Odds And Ends is actually my personal ambition to pay respect and commemorate The Great Alexander McQueen. I invited six local Indonesian designers to pay a tribute to Alexander MQueen by making a creation that inspired by his works infused by Indonesian heritage values and not forgetting thei personal style of designs. The result are breathtaking with epic background of metal recycling junkyard in Cilegon.

Adrian Gan creating a dramatic collars and constructed dress the signature of McQueen from Indonesia weaving mixed with rattan embellishment. Adesagi Kirana chose McQueen's knits drapery and mixed with his pretty romantic style big Rosette from stiffed tulle. Sapto Djokokartiko creating a superb handcrafts ruffle dress from traditional fan made from sandalwood. Andreas Odang inspired by McQueen's perfect tailoring. G.H.O.S.T jueleire took the youth and fun part of McQ labels, the infamous skulls. And lastly, Irsan creating a molded leather bustier tops with dramatic big ruffles skirt as his grief of McQueen's tragic death. While I specifically decided to mashed all the collections and sadness from Spring Summer 2009 collection look.'

Two months ago, we were asked by Shahnaz Soraya, our friend to collaborate on her final project. She's having a diploma in ESMOD Jakarta. Her collection was inspired by the architectural lines and shapes. We made necklaces, brooch and bags embellished with genuine swarovski crystals. It's quite challenging since we never made bags and use crystals as the jewelry decoration. But we really enjoyed it and learned a lot from this.

We are so very excited, last night her collection won the best judge award on the ESMOD 'Archipelago' show. Congratulations Inez!

It's been a while since the magazine published, we haven't uploaded the pictures. 'Garuda Mirage' a special custom made collection for Amica magazine April 2010 issue. It was inspired by the graceful Javanese and Sumba jewelry infused with modern touch. The series was about a selection of amulets that repels the terror of 'Kala', a monstrous giant that devours moon. At first, Agra Satria was asked to do some illustration for the spread, but unfortunately the magazine was published without it. Below are the spread with G.H.O.S.T jewelries.

Last week we had a phone call from KOMPAS newspaper to submit an artwork for its article on sunday 30 May 2010 edition. We were excited yet surprised by its tight deadline. At that time we're kinda' busy preparing some artworks for the next exhibiton of '15x15x15' in Bandung. But in the end we managed to get it printed, although we barely breathing. According to the KOMPAS man, they're going to exhibit it with many other 2010 published illustrations next year. We're really looking forward to it.

Recreate x reality x representation is the third 15x15x15 exhibition, organized by KGB ( Keluarga Grafis Berseni) ITB. This exhibition is unique due to it’s particular rules : the size of the artworks is not more than 15x15x15 cm. The first and the second mini art project was curated by Albert Yonathan held in 2007 and 2008 titled “Scale” which focused on how artist compromise with the size of the artworks and “Metaphoria” that focused in the discourse of metaphor. This time, the problem of ‘representation’ is offered as the big theme to be responded by the participant.

The process of making art can be seen as man’s effort to approach reality. The development of new way of representation is important due to it’s function as human’s effort to interpret and examine reality. This needs, encourage the fostering of alternative theories and modes of representation. Seeing the problem of representation as a basic issues in the process of art creation, 15x15x15 Mini Art Project no # 3 : Recreate x Reality x Representation intend to summarize Bandung’s young artists visions where the artist could depart from the interest of medium, technology and knowledge. This exhibition intends to offer the actual way of seeing realities from young artists, and an examination of artist’s point of interest today.

This time G.H.O.S.T will exhibit with other 70 artists, over 150 artworks of various medium will be featured in this exhibition.

On Last March, our 'Band of the Witches' Lilith was seen wrapped on Imogen Heap's* neck. It was exhilarating!! Her songs have been our most favorite since we were in the second year of college. And later on her first appearance on the stage, surprisingly she wore Yesy's JVSTIFY kimono.

What a double treat indeed.

That night was such a blessing for us.

We love her so much!

On Swank Glossy jan-Feb 2010 edition, G.H.O.S.T 'tengoku' necklace were spotted on Geordon Nicol of the the Misshapes*. We're so excited!! Woot woot!! They were also wearing some local brands, like Priyo Oktaviano, Eduard Hutabarat, FAR, Majic and DOUCHE.

*)The Misshapes are a New York City-based DJ trio composed of Geordon Nicol, Leigh Lezark and Greg Krelenstein. Beginning in 2003, the trio cultivated a large following when they brought to downtown New York City the dance party, "Misshapes". On September 8 2007 after a successful 4 year run, the trio discontinued Misshapes as a weekly party. Since then, the trio continues to DJ and have done several outside projects, including a style book; Misshapes(Nicol, 2008), published by MTV Press, remixes for indie rock and electronica bands and film soundtracking, and have been involved in fashion journalism and photography.

A few weeks ago, we were asked by our best friend, Rinda Salmun to help her create some headpieces for her final project. She's having a master degree of fashion at Ravensbourne College, London. Her collection was inspired by the legendary Javanese shadow puppet. She brilliantly infuses it with glam-rock futuristic theme, through the shades of black and white.

We were honored to took a small part in her project. Her unique collection was reviewed by grey manner, we are so proud of her! BRAVO!

We fell deeply in love with Hedi Slimane's 'Land of The Rising Sun' photos that we ended up thinking to make something to commemorate it, all in honour of Mr. Slimane's creations. We wanted to do something really comprehensive with this theme, which is why we divided them into 2 colections; part 1, featuring a more abstract and geometric shapes and part 2, where we focus more on bringing the Japanese modern way.

We successfully sold a number of these items during last September's Brightspot market, though we do still have several left.For those of you who are interested in getting them, email us as soon as possible so that we can send you the photos of the last remaining items! Hurry, while stocks last!
