the Feathered Snake,

Learn to love cruelty.
You can't shy
from the splash of blood,
or its terrible smell oozing
under the screaming of children.
You're nobly nourished
inside this sacred moment,
like a young wasp
eating through the guts
of its inferior paralysed host.
But when the priests
of your own true faith
light a fire
on the living skin
of your palpitating heart
don't cry out.
Honour is cruelty's
most insatiable bed-mate,
your pride must always
keep its own fires burning
even if, note this,
your own heart must die.
